When I coach my clients we discuss limiting beliefs in length- we acknowledge them, dissect them, turn them over and over, and eventually we kick them to the curb. But this takes time! At first analyzing your thoughts can seem quite daunting to some, especially if there’s a large amount of negative thoughts going around and ’round.
It can create a feeling of overwhelm, not knowing where to start. How do you let go of so many negative thoughts at once?
One of my clients gave me a great idea regarding the overwhelm that can come with many things in life, including limitingScreen Shot 2014-06-18 at 2.22.58 PM beliefs. She read that a large percentage of people that set New Year’s resolutions eventually don’t succeed at the changes that they want to make due to the overwhelm of change. Instead she decided to commit to making one change per month throughout the year! Brilliant!!!!
It got me thinking about how we can overcome the overwhelm of releasing limiting beliefs in a similar way. Who says we need to tackle everything at once?
To tackle your limiting beliefs in a way that works for you, write down all of the limiting beliefs that you can think of. If this is difficult for you, just allow yourself to think of the areas in your life that you feel you haven’t quite succeeded at. It can be weight loss, quitting smoking, reaching a peak in your career, finding a great relationship etc. When you think of the places where success is limited there is always a limiting belief standing in your way. It could be ‘I’m not good enough, I’m not smart enough, I’m not pretty enough, I can’t do that, It’s easy for others but not me, I’m too tired etc. etc.
Once you’ve made your list, review it and pick ONE! Just one! Then set the intention that you’re going to release this belief. Then imagine what your life would be like if you could never think of that limiting belief again. Just be curious about this, and allow yourself to experience the feelings that come when thinking this belief does not exist! How great does that feel? Breathe it IN!
Then for one whole month anytime you feel stuck in this area of struggle, find that limiting belief, and do the same thing. Allow yourself to examine what life would be like if it didn’t exist anymore. Paint that picture! How would life feel if you could not think of that negative thought anymore.
Over time the limiting belief and thought will slowly start to move into the background. Trust me on this, and trust yourself- You can do this.
Then the next month review your list, and pick another limiting belief to let go of and do the same thing.
Set the intention to take control of your thoughts and your life, and put one foot in front of the other. It would be nice if everything could happen at once but sometimes that’s not our reality. Rome wasn’t built in a day, right? Be kind & loving to yourself, because no matter what you’re thoughts are telling you- you deserve it!
