Fun, Sun, and the need to Overcome Overwhelm

by | Aug 22, 2014 | Meditation

Who would have thought that as August draws close to an end the need to overcome overwhelm would arise? I find that near the end of summer many of us go into a bit of a panic, at least I know I do.

We’ve spent the summer enjoying ourselves with fun, sun, visits, trips, family, friends, and in some cases a lot of wine Shhh- it’ll be our little secret.

Now summer is almost over and guess what? We’re starting to think about back to school, back to work, back to reality! Oh NO!

This time of year sessions with my clients that have a lot to do with overwhelm, as they sift through their remaining summer days in anticipation of the Fall.

I know for myself my work really ramps up starting September. Sometimes I have to take a deep breath when I think of it. For many the thought of the future along with a ‘to do’ list can actually spark feelings of overwhelm, and completely over shadow any feelings of joy and happiness.

Just yesterday I saw the very first hummingbird in my backyard, so I silently crept as close as I could to watch it. I’m always blown away by how fast they fly around. I sat in awe of how quickly it moved from one flower to the next trying to get as much nectar as possible. And then the most beautiful thing happened: it flew to one of the branches of our weeping birch and stayed there. I watched as it cleaned itself and even scratched its head. It took time from zipping around the sky and feeding from a flower, to sit on the branch and take note of it’s surroundings.

It reminded me of how our daily lives can be quite similar to that of the hummingbird flying. So fast- with a mission, or many missions. How often do we stop to take notice of the things around us. If we’re so busy running we don’t have time to stop and smell the roses. We could be missing something so beautiful and not even know it. Our society in general has a strong need to get everything done asap and to fixate on our ‘to do’ list. This takes us out of the moment and we find ourselves going into overwhelm.

So how do we overcome overwhelm? Perhaps we could take a lesson from the beautiful scene with the hummingbird: just stop, take note of your surroundings and breathe. Allow yourself to find your tree branch. Tomorrow will come no matter what, you might as well experience every moment to it’s fullest.
