Do dragonflies have to work on being their authentic Self?
I just got back from a holiday visiting family at a beautiful lake in Saskatchewan and I was blown away by the amount of dragonflies that were zipping around- just being and doing what they came here to be and do!saved dragonfly 2
I love dragonflies for so many reasons and not just because they eat those pesky mosquitos. I look at these tiny little insects (some of them not so tiny!) as a metaphor for how we should and could be living our lives. The phrase ‘let us be what we long to be’ goes hand in hand with how dragonflies live. Being in the presence of these beautiful creatures reminded me of one of the 5 steps to the path of tranquility that I wrote about in my e-book. Because the message is so important I figured I’d share it again with you in hopes that the life of a dragonfly can be metaphorical to how you can find your true authentic Self.
As a dragonfly lives a short life: it knows it must live life to it’s fullest with the short time it has. Which is a lesson for all of us.
The dragonfly can move at approximately 45 miles an hour: quite fast for something so small. I’m sure you’ve seen it hovering in the air, then fly in any direction: straight up, down or side-to-side. It doesn’t need to do circles but goes in the direction that it wants and needs. What is even more amazing is that they do this while only flapping their wings a small number of times per second: much less than that of any other insect. The dragonfly does this with simplicity & ease as it all comes from the innateness that was offered upon coming to this earth. It’s done with elegance & grace.
The dragonfly normally lives most of its life as a nymph. It flies only for a fraction of its life and usually not more than a few months at most. This adult dragonfly leaves nothing to be desired. This style of life symbolizes and exemplifies the beauty of living in the moment and living life to it’s fullest.
A dragonfly doesn’t know how long it will live for: it doesn’t feel the need to ask those questions. It knows it’s purpose and doesn’t get caught up in the ‘how, what, where, and why’s of the mind. Just as the dragonfly is unsure of its lifespan so are we! We have NO idea how long we’ll live on this earth for yet we get caught up in asking so many questions and overanalyzing everything thought, feeling and action from others and ourselves!
When living as a dragonfly we allow ourselves to live our purpose: we all came here with one. When we allow our own innate qualities to shine through and start living our purpose it creates a sense of completeness and wholeness in oneself. Purpose can mean different things to different people, but what we can take from the dragonfly is that our main purpose is just to be living each moment with authenticity and the pure potential that is in your very Soul. As the dragonfly, we let grace and elegance vibrate out from us and radiate that out into the world.
Finding your own inner dragonfly means being whole, happy, complete, and finding your true authentic Self.
So fly my little Dragonfly- fly!!! Soar through the sky and embrace your authentic Self! And don’t worry, you’re not expected to eat mosquitos…unless that’s part of your diet. And if so…. gross!!! But who am I to judge ♥ ♥
PS- the photo above is of a dragonfly that I saved. It was struggling in the water and I couldn’t stand to watch it suffer, so I got it out and it flew to the tree above.
