Does your life story include limiting beliefs? Do you have a record player in your mind that is telling the same story over, and over, and over again?
Just a few weeks ago I had the pleasure of watching the movie Saving Mr. Banks, and during one scene in particular I was moved to tears. It was when Walt (Disney) was pleading with Ms. P.L. Traverse to change the story of Mr. Banks, who is one of the characters in the ever popular movie Mary Poppins.
You see, Ms. Traverse was stuck in her own story- she had experienced something tragic as a child and it was being recycled through her thoughts, which in turn affected her feelings and actions. She was stuck in the same place, and as long as she kept her story the same she would not prosper. Walt Disney could see that this was happening and all he said was ‘change the story for Mr. Banks,’ and well, you’ll have to watch the movie to see what happens, but I’m sure you can guess.
To me this was a huge reminder that as living Souls on this earth we have the ability to change our own story. All of us have a record player that plays over and over, which isn’t altogether that bad, really. But what is the content of the words? What thoughts do we have circulating? Are they harmful? Are they beautiful? Are they filled with limiting beliefs that keep you stuck?
In one of my coaching sessions my client said to me “I am DONE! I don’t want to feel this way anymore and I don’t want to think this way anymore’. She had been struggling for years upon years with self-limiting beliefs and most times not even aware of it. Her story was that ‘she wasn’t good enough, she couldn’t be successful at anything, she didn’t deserve love, she didn’t deserve to be healthy, and on and on. Any of this sound familiar?
With law of attraction when your dominant thoughts are that of ‘not enough’ or ‘lack of’- you just get more of that. You will find yourself stuck in the same patterns and experiencing the same or similar situations, until your thoughts start to change.
I asked her if she was ready to change her story and she took a deep breath and replied with a resounding YES!
I asked her define what her current story was. I wanted her to be aware of what her thoughts were, so that she could change them.
So she described to me everything that’s been holding her back: all of the negative, self depricating comments, limiting beliefs that have been driving her on a downward spiral. And yes, she cried! And I cried with her.
I then asked her what she wanted her story to be? What did she want to think, feel, and who did she want to be?
She rapidly started speaking of this wonderful life, amazing feelings and uplifting thoughts. She wanted to be kind to herself, loving to herself, nurturing and compassionate to herself. The very last thing she said was ‘I want to be authentic’.
This, I could tell was a pivotal moment in her life. This was a moment where one more woman of this world was going to regain her empowerment. The energy was palpable even over the phone, and it was exhilarating for us both. And we cried- happy tears!
In that very moment my client realized that she had the power to take control and change her story. It was her AHA moment and herScreen Shot 2014-02-01 at 2.43.38 PM life will never be the same because of it. In that moment she shifted from a place of hopelessness to complete empowerment and authenticity.
And all she did was change her story.
We don’t need to be haunted by the ghosts of our past! We have the ability to create the story that we want. In any given moment if we don’t like what we’re experiencing we have the power to change it. How cool is that?!
YOU have the divine right to be empowered to create a life filled with purpose and happiness- you’ve just got to choose it by changing your story and kicking those self-limiting beliefs to the curb! Press the stop button on that player and change the track!
