What does it mean to be your Authentic Self?

by | Nov 4, 2013 | Meditation

During my morning walk with Luna I started thinking about what it means to be authentic. I know that I’ve touched on this subject before, but it’s a subject that I feel can never be discussed enough.

The reason I started thinking about authenticity was because as we were walking I seeing dragonflies that had died all along the path. Due to my love for dragonflies this sight, at first, made me a little sad,but it made me think back to the meaning behind these little species.

For those that have downloaded my free e-book, the 5 Steps to the Path of Tranquility (free on the right hand side of this page), you might recognize where I’m going with this.

Dragonflies come here with this innate quality to live it’s life to the fullest: they don’t ask the Why, What, Where, or How questions that we do.

So how does this relate to us as humans? Well, we were all born with the innate quality to live life to it’s fullest, but as we grow up certain experiences and situations can disrupt that thought process. This then creates such things as limiting beliefs, habits, fears, & insecurities that keep us stuck in patterns where true happiness and being authentic is not possible.

So what’s my point right?

As a dragonfly comes here to live life to it’s fullest so should we! We were not put on this earth to suffer, and if you believe this to be true, you’re already on the right path.

So many of us (myself included) go through undesirable situations and focus on the negative and get stuck on it. Does a dragonfly do that? Absolutely not!

Now, I understand we’re a different species altogether, but does that mean we can’t take a lesson or two from something that zips around at 45 miles per hour focusing on it’s Soul purpose? Again, absolutely not!

I do my best to live the life I was meant to- that doesn’t mean I don’t get stuck in situations that are undesirable, sad, uncomfortable or even tragic- I am only human . What I DO with those moments is what matters most: I do my best to look at how I can move through these situations as my most authentic Self. To me, that means with honesty, grace, truth, & heart.

I want to enjoy every moment on this earth and know that I helped others do the same. My purpose is to live life to it’s fullest no matter what situation I find myself in.

So, seeing the dragonflies laying on the ground, I know that they came here with a purpose. It puts a smile on my face, and warmth in my heart to know that these little creatures are offering a valuable lesson to not just myself, but hopefully anyone reading this.

So next time you see a dragonfly of any sort- be it a real one or a picture- I invite you to ask yourself ‘How am I being authentic? Am I living my life with purpose? Where is my inner dragonfly?’
